Debra Cowan was once asked what kind of songs she writes. Her reply? “Bad ones; but there are so many good songs out there written by others and they should be sung.”

Her captivating warm alto carries each folk song she chooses with such emotion that you’ll forget that they were written by others. She performs a cappella and with guitar in the great tradition of folk singers like Joan Baez and Judy Collins, with a clear vocal that calls forth the ghosts of long past but can also offer a more modern urban landscape. In her 2012 release, a live recording entitled “Among Friends,” she demonstrates her ability to interact with her audience and have them enthusiastically sing along on choruses and refrains.

“Each song is a different anthem from the choir of the soul. His voice, his spirit and the mission that fuels this CD is a salve to the soul and a celebration of the rich miracles of life. This is not just a CD…it is medicine and it will heal the soul of the listener” -Orion Foxwood

If the saying “Music is the Soul given a voice” is true, then Rene Collins is that voice. Infusing African spirituality with reggae, jazz, folk, and a hint of Hip hop for taste, he blends together a sound, as contemporary as it is timeless. His music gives us more than something to fill the silence. He imparts to us words of wisdom and light in a perfect marriage of insight and love.

The world of Neofolk Romantique is a world of animism; where the spirit of the mountain watches silently with ancient eyes, while the wind whistles and shrieks above, where a storm takes human form and comes to us as a lover upon the roiling sea. Where porcelain dolls come to life at loves first kiss, and portals to magic and wonder open up on streets we’ve walked a hundred times.
